Bulbs, Bulbs, Bulbs

Bulbs are so much more than tulips and daffodils, like these gorgeous pink day lilies.Nothing says Spring! like a bulb garden coming to life with narcissus, tulip, and hyacinth. But did you know you can extend your season of bulb beauty by planting a wider variety? Take a look around your property to see where a display of late spring or early summer showoffs will catch your eye. Some bulbs, like narcissus, even help to repel voles from damaging nearby plants. Bulbs are also a great addition to your container gardens.

Lilies come in textures and colors to fit every garden. Some are wonderfully fragrant. If you have roses, lilies in bloom at the same time can be stunning.

Alliums can fill your garden with drama and whimsy in late spring and early summer. They even come in other shapes and sizes besides the familiar purple-ball-on-a-stick. Allium bulgarium flowers are a lovely spray of bell shapes on a tall stem with maroon centers edged with white. Allium karataviense are low growing and add interest to your early summer garden with showy gray-purple foliage and pale pink flower heads that can even be dried.

Dahlias are a bulb garden essential! They make up for their need to be dug up in the fall with their eye-popping array of colors, sizes, and flower forms. Plus they bloom like crazy!
