2002 New York State Integrated Pest Management Program Award
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - October 1, 2002 The New York State Integrated Pest Management Program has selected Broccolo Tree and Lawn Care as a 2002 recipient of the Excellence in IPM Award. Each year the Program awards individuals or organizations whose work supports integrated pest management in New York State in one or more of the following ways:
- Developing new tools that will speed the adoption of IPM.
- Allowing IPM methods to be evaluated in their growing operations.
- Encouraging demonstrations of IPM methods on their farms.
- Promoting IPM in their businesses.
- Bolstering the adoption of IPM practices through the work of their organizations or through educational programs.
Integrated pest management is about dealing with pest problems using the most effective, least-risk options. Doing IPM well requires learning and applying information across many disciplines, including meteorology, biology, chemistry, soil management, and record keeping. Broccolo Tree and Lawn Care bases its entire practice on the principles and methods of IPM to work with nature and to prevent indiscriminant use of pesticides. Under IPM, actions are taken to control pests only when their numbers are likely to exceed acceptable levels. Any action taken is designed to target the troublesome pest, and limit the impact on other organisms and the environment.
New York State established its Integrated Pest Management Program in 1985 to develop and deliver sustainable ways to manage pests that are cost-effective and pose minimal risks to human health and the environment. The Program focuses on IPM in four major commodity production areas: vegetables, livestock/field crops, fruit, and ornamentals. The intent is to bring IPM methods, knowledge, and technology to the farms and agricultural production operations of the state.
